Day 1

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

A is for audio Bible,
For listening to God’s wonderful Word.
As Mike took off in his small aircraft,
He was glad the Good News would be heard.

The first stop was northern Australia,
The territory of Arnhem Land.
As Mike landed his plane on the airstrip,
A man came to lend him a hand.

‘Most Bibles here are in English.
That’s not something that’s easy to read.
But now we can hear our own language,
Your cargo’s a blessing indeed!’

Mike showed him the audio Bible,
All charged up by the sun’s warm rays.
No need to worry about batteries or plugs,
Now people could listen for days.

These audio Bibles are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 2

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

B is for blankets, cosy and warm,
Stacked up in the back of Mike’s plane.
Flying so high, he looked down at the view
But could only see muddy terrain.

Beneath Mike lay Sulawesi island,
A place where he often had flown.
This Indonesian land was ruined and scarred,
It was a true disaster zone!

There’d been an earthquake and tsunami,
But MAF had got there quick,
Delivering everything the people might need
To those who were injured or sick.

Mike brought his plane down safely
For the people who’d lost their homes.
They were glad to receive his blankets
To cover their weary bones.

These blankets are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 3

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

C is for chimpanzee – what a surprise!
As Mike turned his plane to the west,
A call came over his radio set,
‘Please respond to this urgent request!

‘A poor baby chimp has been injured,
She has fallen out of a tree.
Please will you help us by taking her
To the wildlife sanctuary?’

Mike landed his plane in Liberia,
Where he picked up the injured ape.
Her name was Mary Beauty,
And she’d had a lucky escape.

Some poachers had killed her mother,
Leaving Mary all alone.
Mike was only too happy to take her
To the safety of her new home.

Chimpanzees are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 4

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

D is for dentist – open wide!
They help us to keep our teeth healthy.
Although there are many in the UK,
Not every place is as wealthy.

The next stop for Mike was Papua,
And as he began to descend,
Down there waiting, below on the ground
Was a dentist called Ika, his friend!

‘Please take me to Nalca,’ said Ika,
‘I’m teaching the small children there
About how to clean and look after their teeth
And to treat all their smiles with care.

‘I use my puppets to teach them,
They really enjoy the show.
Fun helps the children remember
The toothbrushing skills they should know.’

Dentists are just some of passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 5

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

E is for evangelist –
Which is quite a difficult word
For a person who tells others about God’s love,
So the Good News can be heard.

Elisha lives in Tanzania,
Where he shares God’s Word with his tribe.
He travels all over the area,
Preaching to those far and wide.

As Mike brought his plane to a standstill,
He saw Elisha with a giraffe.
It was his dear friend Alpha,
Who always made Mike laugh.

The pair were surrounded by people,
Who were eager to hear what they’d say.
They’d been sharing God’s love with the Maasai,
And teaching them all how to pray.

‘MAF flies me to faraway places.
If I walked, it would take many days,’
Said Elisha, as he entered the aircraft,
‘You’re such a great help Mike, always.’

‘May I join in your alphabet adventure?’
Alpha asked his good friend Mike.
‘To see the things MAF’s flying,
Is something I’d really like.’

Evangelists are just some of passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 6

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

F is for fuel drums – jolly and red,
And very heavy indeed.
With fuel inside, to help our planes fly,
It’s just what our pilots need.

Mike’s next stop was back in Australia,
To MAF’s maintenance base.
Waiting was Pilot Bridget,
With a great big smile on her face.

‘Welcome, Mike and Alpha,
I hope you can help me today.
These drums full of fuel will help me fly
To Arnhem Land far away.’

The friends were only too happy to help,
And the drums were soon on the plane.
Then heading west towards Arnhem Land,
They knew they’d see their friends again.

These fuel drums are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 7

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

G is for glass eyes – they can’t help you see,
But they might help you feel more content
If you unfortunately lost your own eye
Through an illness or accident.

The next stop was Madagascar,
On the runway below was a fox.
It was their old friend Foxtrot,
In whose paws they saw a box.

Foxtrot handed over the cargo,
A big box filled with glass eyes.
They were needed in a faraway hospital,
To give a patient a nice surprise.

Foxtrot climbed into the aircraft,
And the friends were soon in the air,
Heading off to the remote village hospital,
To deliver the cargo there.

These glass eyes are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 8

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

H is for healthcare workers
Who use their special skills
To help people far from a hospital,
And take care of all their ills.

Next stop for the friends was Angola,
The home of Dr Tim.
He looks after people who aren’t very well,
So they were pleased they could help him.

‘Hello friends,’ said the doctor,
As Mike carefully landed his plane.
‘I’m needed in a hard-to-reach village,
Do you think you could help me again?

‘I help people when they’re feeling sick,
I tell them about Jesus too,
But the village is a very long way away,
So I can’t get there without you.’

‘Climb on board,’ shouted Alpha.
‘We’ll soon get you there,’ said Mike.
Foxtrot said, as he loaded the plane,
‘We’re glad we can save you a hike.’

Healthcare staff are just some of the passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,

Day 9

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

I is for injured people,
Who need urgent medical care.
If they can’t get to hospital by car or bus,
MAF carries them in the air.

As Mike and his friends headed west,
An urgent call came through:
‘Could you hurry to the island of Timor-Leste?
We’ve an urgent job for you.

‘A villager was hurt on his bike,
When it started veering madly.
Please take the patient in your plane,
He needs a crutch quite badly.’

The friends were only too happy to help,
And they sped to the man in their plane.
They soon had him safe with the doctors
Who helped him feel better again.

Injured people are just some of the passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 10

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

J is for the Jesus film,
With a powerful story to tell
Of what Jesus did in His time on earth,
And His power to change lives as well.

The next stop for the friends was Uganda,
To catch up with their old mate Sam,
Who works hard as an evangelist,
Which is why he’s a busy man.

Sam was below on the airstrip
As Mike brought his plane in to land.
‘Could you take me to the Ssese Islands?
I’ve something exciting planned.

‘The people who live in the islands
Have had a difficult year.
I’m going to show them the Jesus film;
They need some Christmas cheer!’

In no time at all, they were on their way
To the isolated location,
Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ
At the islanders’ celebration.

The Jesus film is just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 11

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

K is for the Kündigs,
A couple from Switzerland.
They’ve been with MAF for many years,
And love to lend a hand.

Our friends flew to see them in Guinea,
Which is where Emil and Margrit live.
They are travelling around the country
To see what help MAF can give.

The roads in Guinea are not very good,
With some washed away by the rain.
It’s certainly easier to travel there
If you’re flying in Mike’s little plane.

It would be such a joy for the people
If there was an MAF base.
The Kündigs are working to set one up,
Which would be a great help for the place.

Alpha was very excited
To hear all the news of their mission.
He decided he’d stay and help them there;
He’d be a most useful addition.

The Kündigs are just some of the passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

L is for Lesotho Flying Pastors,
Who rely on MAF’s aviation
To spread the Good News of Jesus Christ
To those in this African nation.

Mike and Foxtrot flew over the mountains,
Touching down in a most remote place.
A joyful man came towards them,
With a great big grin on his face.

‘Thanks for landing here,’ he said,
‘I’m a Lesotho Flying Pastor.
If you can take me in your little plane,
My journey will be much faster.

‘I’m going to visit the shepherds,
I’ve a Christian film to show them.
I’ll tell them all about God’s love,
And how He longs to know them.’

‘Climb on board,’ said Foxtrot,
‘We’d love to help you out.
The shepherds will be glad to see you,
Of that I have no doubt.’

The Lesotho pastors are just some of the passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

M is for medical supplies,
Such as bandages, gloves and pills.
All the things a doctor needs
To cure people of their ills.

The next stop for the friends was in Chad
At a hospital which was pretty remote.
Below on the airstrip waving,
Was a doctor in a white coat.

‘Hello Mike,’ said Dr Mark,
‘Getting supplies here can be tough.
I’m hoping that in the back of your plane
You’ll have lots of medical stuff.’

In the back of the plane were boxes
Of medicine, crutches and masks.
Just what the doctor ordered
To help with his medical tasks.

‘I’m so grateful to MAF,’ said Dr Mark,
‘Who really help my work here.
You keep flying all the equipment we need;
We had over a tonne last year!’

Medical supplies are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 14

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

N is for neem trees – they’re really quite small,
And fit in the back of Mike’s plane.
They’re planted to prevent soil erosion,
Which can happen a lot when there’s rain.

This unusual cargo was destined
To be delivered to South Sudan.
As Mike came to a halt on the airstrip,
He was met by a smiling man.

‘Thank you for bringing these saplings
To replace the trees lost in a flood.
The Nile burst its banks in the springtime,
And left the place covered in mud.

‘We don’t want the soil to be washed away,
It’s so important for farming.
Being unable to grow the food we need
Would really be alarming.’

Mike and Foxtrot unloaded their plane,
There were 2,000 plants in the hold.
Once they’d been placed outside the plane,
It was quite a sight to behold.

Neem trees are just one of the things
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 15

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

O is for orthopaedic surgeon,
That’s a special sort of physician.
One who treats bones and joints which hurt
And puts them in the right position.

The next stop for Mike was Kenya,
He was collecting a medical team,
Then flying them to a faraway village
Where the patients were waiting to be seen.

Mike landed the plane on the runway,
And the doctors all climbed inside.
The journey would take two hours,
So they’d have an enjoyable ride.

As they neared their remote destination,
The friends could see from the plane
A queue of people forming below,
Some sad and clearly in pain.

The doctors were soon very busy
Helping those in the queue that had formed.
They treated loads of people,
Whose lives were now totally transformed.

Orthopaedic surgeons are just some of the folk
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Day 16

‘MAF aircraft fly all sorts of things
To help people out,’ Mike said.
‘This Advent, let’s build a list of them
All the way from A to Z.’

P is for primary school teacher,
Someone who helps us to learn.
But if there isn’t a school where you live,
Then education is quite a concern.

In the country of Bangladesh,
Which was Mike’s next destination,
He’d heard of lots of children
In a very remote location.

There wasn’t a school for them nearby,
But teacher Julie was willing to go.
She’d set up a new school for the children,
But still needed to get there though.

Mike’s MAF plane is just the thing
For getting to a far-flung place,
So Julie climbed into the plane,
With a massive great smile on her face.

‘Without you to fly me, Mike,’ she said,
‘This journey would take me all day.
But your plane will get me to the classroom
Safely and without delay.’

Primary teachers are just some of the passengers
That MAF flies through the skies.
Join us tomorrow for the next letter,
And another exciting surprise.

Look around

Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest nation in the world.

When you think of Brazil, you probably think of rainforests, but the landscape is actually very varied. In the north, you’ll find the Amazon – the world’s largest rainforest. But there are also dry grasslands, rugged hills, pine forests, swampy wetlands, and a long coastline. The swamps are home to some amazing animals – giant anacondas, huge guinea pig-like animals called capybaras, and scary alligators called caimans. In 1956, MAF started a flight service for missions serving in Brazil. As the project grew, it became a Brazilian-run programme called Asas de Socorro (ADS), a sister organisation to MAF.

A little more about Brazil...

Location

Brazil is situated on South America’s eastern coast. The country contains the majority of the Amazon River and has the most extensive rainforest.

Fascinating Fact

Located 25 miles off the coast of Brazil is a place known as ‘Snake Island’. It is completely uninhabited by humans because it’s home to a large number of venomous snakes. It’s not all bad news, though! Scientists believe that venom from some of the snakes could be used to make medicine for various conditions.

Weather

Current Weather: 20°C, Clear

It’s coming to the end of spring in Brazil at the moment. It’s lovely and warm on the coast – about 25°C – but it’s particularly rainy in the Amazon rainforest at this time of year.

The water of life

Can you imagine not having clean water to drink or not having flushing toilets? This is the reality for many communities in Brazil, especially those living along the Purus River.

In the Amazon jungle, the rivers act as roads. If you are travelling in a boat on the Purus River there are lots of twists and turns and it’s very difficult to go from one community to another.

The water of the Purus River is muddy and dark. It’s no good for drinking or cooking, but the people living along its banks have no choice.

The main reason people get ill is because they drink dirty water. Even if medicine is given through mobile clinics, the problems come back because the root cause is the water.

MAF’s Brazilian affiliate Asas de Socorro is helping a clean water project run by the Christian charity Tearfund. It’s called Água Limpa para os Curumins or, in English, ‘Clean Water for the Curumins’ – a local word for children in the region.

But because it’s so difficult to travel anywhere, the Clean Water team can only reach the isolated river communities by using MAF aircraft.

Jaime, one of the people who lives along the river with his four children, describes what the water used to be like.

‘We used to chew sand. At the river’s edge, we would put the water in a drum or container and use it for one or two days for washing dishes, making food and drinking. It was dark, muddy water. Children and adults had diarrhoea because of it.’

Tearfund got the whole community involved in building the structure for the water tank and the filter in Jaime’s community, Kakuri, and in 16 other river communities in the Amazon.

‘Now the water is filtered, clean and nice to drink. The water goes smoothly down our throat,’ says Jaime, full of joy.

The hope now is to continue the project, putting in water treatment stations in 20 more communities along the Purus River.

Pray

Dear God, thank you that we have lovely clean water in our homes. We pray that more people will be able to access clean water around the world, so they don’t get poorly. Thank You for organisations like MAF and Tearfund which work to make this possible. Amen.

Today's Challenge

Make sure you turn off the tap when you brush your teeth and be conscious of saving water – as some people live without the availability of clean water.

Did you complete yesterday's challenge?
